The Morristown & Morris Township Library is seeking a friendly, customer service-oriented person to join our creative and dedicated staff as the Department Head for the Reference and Adult Services Department. This position manages three full-time and three part-time reference librarians and four part-time reader’s advisors, who aid our patrons through outreach efforts, public programming, reference, technology help, and reader’s advisory. The person in this position is a key member of our management team and also oversees adult collection development, reference and database services, and the Library website.

Our Reference and Adult Services Department provides ongoing computer, phone, tablet and other technological help for our patrons. The Department is responsible for editing much of the Library’s website, assisting with social media accounts and sending out our email newsletter. The Head of Reference and Adult Services administers the Library’s print management system and mobile printing options, is involved with our security systems, our incident reporting system and ILS development. This Department Head also works with the Library’s Technology Specialist on a variety of projects. The person in this position follows current trends in library technology and selects new technologies of value to the Library.

The Head of Reference and Adult Services oversees all adult collection development for eBooks, fiction and non-fiction print books as well as streaming and reference database options. The Library has a collection of about 210,000 volumes, which includes strong holdings of ESOL materials, Spanish and Russian language collections, and a museum pass collection. The Library has strong readership in popular fiction and this position oversees the maintenance of the Library’s fiction collection with the Reference staff and the Reader’s Advisors.

What is the Library looking for in a candidate?
In addition to having an M.L.S. or M.L.I.S. degree and a background in the methods, practices and operations involved in a public library Reference and Adult Services department, the ideal candidate will be committed to customer service, have creative ideas and dedication to community outreach, robust collection development skills and strong leadership ability, problem solving and management skills. Candidates need a minimum of five years’ experience in the Reference or Adult Services Department of a public library and two to five years of management experience. We are looking for someone with excellent verbal and written communication skills, experience with a variety of library software such as ILS and room reservation systems, and web-based and software-based computer programs including Canva and Excel. Fluency in Spanish is a plus as is knowledge of web editing. New Jersey residency required.
What are the perks for working at the Library?
This is a full-time position, 35 hours per week that includes some evenings and weekends. The salary begins at $80,000 commensurate with experience. The position also includes a pension through the State Division of Pensions & Benefits, an optional 403b plan, great vacation benefits, paid holidays, paid sick time, personal time, health insurance, and an optional dental plan. A busy library located in downtown Morristown, The Morristown & Morris Township Library serves residents of the Township of Morris, the Town of Morristown, greater Morris County and beyond. The genesis of our Library began in 1792 as a private membership library and became a joint free public library in 1966. The Library provides residents with reading materials, access to technology and continuing education, self-improvement, enjoyment, and information. We provide a myriad of virtual and in-person programming for both adults and children, regularly collaborate with local organizations and participate in many annual events in the area. Our bookmobile service, which began in the 1920s, serves preschools, after school programs, day care centers, and senior facilities in our service area. Our popular Caroline Rose Foster North Jersey History & Genealogy Center preserves state and local manuscripts, books, photographs, maps, newspapers and more. We maintain Little Free Libraries in our municipalities and through our Friends of the Library hold booksales weekly to raise funds for everything from needed Library technology to free books for children that we provide to attendees of our multiple summer reading book clubs. With a staff of 48, we maintain a welcoming atmosphere for patrons of all walks of life inside our 1917 historic building that was expanded in 1930, 1987, and 2006.
